eUICC (eSIM) - The new technology for SIM-enabled routers

What is eUICC (eSIM)?

eUICCs are often also referred to as eSIMs. eSIM refers to a solderable SIM chip. The eUICC, on the other hand, is independent of the SIM card format, and is available for both chip SIMs and plastic SIM cards. This means that older products can also be retrofitted with eUICC. This eliminates one of the biggest challenges in the installation and service of mobile routers.

SIM cards that have to be installed before or during operation are no longer practical for many devices. A SIM that can be reprogrammed is the solution.

The latest incarnation for the time being is the eSIM or chip SIM. This is a solderable SIM chip and there are now also smaller formats such as XS-Quad. Due to this nomenclature, there is often confusion with the eUICC, i.e. the SIM card onto which one can download various profiles, so-called subscriptions.

What are the advantages of the new technology?

The SIM card can be provided with a new provider profile over the air. This means that the SIM card no longer needs to be replaced when the operator changes - minimizing sources of error and shortening maintenance and thus also the downtimes of machines and vehicles.

Another advantage of the eUICC is that the mobile operator can be changed, whether for the consumer eSIM or the M2M eSIM, and without having to change the physical SIM card.

The added value of this solution is that the end customer receives the hardware and software as before and is also free to choose his mobile network operator.

Is the eSIM the solution for M2M data communication?

The SIM tariffs have been adapted to the needs of both end users and M2M applications. Changing mobile operator is now the norm - even for the use of SIM cards in the M2M sector.

In the partner webinar with NetModule, we explain the background to eUICC (eSIM), highlight its development, shed light on the differences between SIM and eSIM and explain the advantages of this technology for SIM-enabled routers.

Routers for industry and general applications

The NB800 is a router with a soldered-in mobile radio modem, while the NB1800 is designed with a modular modem and can be equipped with up to two modems and two SIM cards. The eUICCs are also available in the common formats FF2 (Mini-SIM) and FF3 (Micro-SIM), so that the entire NetModule portfolio can be upgraded with eUICC.
