Over 7,000 LoRaWAN sensors enable centralized temperature monitoring in supermarkets

An Austrian supermarket chain uses over 7,000 LoRaWAN sensors to centrally monitor temperatures in more than 1,000 stores. The solution enables real-time alerts, reduces food waste, and minimizes the need for manual checks. Wireless sensors, combined with a central SaaS platform, ensure reliable data, consistent food quality, and more efficient operations.

Optimal temperature control and less food waste

A leading supermarket chain in Austria operates over 1,000 stores nationwide, featuring numerous refrigerated and heated food display areas. To ensure optimal storage conditions and prevent food waste, the retailer partnered with Sensor Network Services to implement a centralized temperature monitoring solution for all its locations.

The initial situation

Until now, temperature checks have been performed manually on site. As a result, problems or equipment failures were often detected too late. At the same time, these regular checks required additional staff resources.

Undetected temperature deviations or fluctuations in refrigerated display cases and heated display cases could also lead to a decline in quality or food spoilage.

The challenge

The goal was to reliably and continuously monitor temperatures in the refrigerated and heated display areas at over 1,000 supermarket locations.
In addition, equipment failures or malfunctions were to be detected early and automatically reported before food spoiled or quality was compromised.

The solution

  • To monitor refrigerated and frozen foods, Sensor Network Services installed over 6,000 EM300-TH temperature and humidity sensors from Milesight. These sensors monitor temperature ranges from +10 °C to −18 °C and, thanks to LoRaWAN, can be installed quickly and without wiring.

  • In addition , more than 1,000 high-precision EM500-PT100 platinum temperature sensors, also from Milesight, are used in the heated display cases. The sensors feature a concealed external probe that enables precise temperature measurements without coming into contact with food or grease.

  • The collected data is processed via a central, in-house developed IoT platform. This platform enables centralized monitoring of all branches, forwards real-time alerts to the customer’s existing alarm system, and ensures secure data storage on servers in Austria.

“We’ve been working with m2m Germany for several years now and really value our partnership. Not only do we source sensors from m2m, but we also receive excellent technical advice on our use cases and projects. With a partner like this, developing new use cases is a pleasure. Thank you very much for the long-standing partnership.”
