Future on rails: owa5X receives EN 50155 certification for rail transport

Important milestone for Owasys

Our Spanish partner Owasys recently announced the successful EN 50155 certification of its owa5X telematics gateways. This means that they are now officially approved for use in rail transportation. The certification is a decisive criterion for OEMs and system integrators who require robust, powerful and reliable communication solutions for the rail sector - especially for data-driven applications such as fleet management, predictive maintenance, passenger information and real-time monitoring.

What does EN 50155 mean?

The EN 50155 standard specifies the requirements for electronic devices for use on rail vehicles. It covers aspects such as temperature resistance, shock and vibration resistance, voltage ranges, EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) and moisture protection. It is particularly relevant for on-board electronics such as computers, displays, power supply units, communication devices and control systems that are installed in trains or streetcars, for example. The aim is to ensure that the devices used can withstand the extreme environmental conditions and operational challenges of rail transportation over the long term.

Owasys takes the owa5X to the next level

With the EN 50155 certification, Owasys once again demonstrates its innovative strength in the field of Industrial IoT. The owa5X platform combines computing power, flexibility and connectivity in a compact and extremely robust housing. The system is based on Linux and can be individually adapted to different applications - whether as a gateway, data logger or communication module.

This certification is particularly interesting for our customers: it opens up new possibilities in railroad technology projects where standardized, certified hardware solutions are required. This makes the integration of owa5X into existing railroad systems much easier and regulatory compliant and is now fully compliant with railroad industry standards - making it the ideal choice for applications in rail vehicles, predictive maintenance, fleet management and real-time monitoring:

  • EN 50155 (2021): Railroad applications - Railway vehicles - Electronic equipment.
  • EN 50121-3-2 (2016) / A1 (2019): Electromagnetic compatibility for railway rolling stock equipment.
  • EN 50125-1: Environmental conditions for vehicles and on-board equipment (sections 4.2 and 4.3).
  • EN 45545-2: Fire protection - Requirements for the reaction to fire performance of materials and building elements.
  • EN 50153:2014 + A1:2017: Safety requirements for electrical hazards.

And what about IEC 60571?

IEC 60571 was the basic international standard for electronic railroad equipment for many years, but has now been largely replaced or transferred by EN 50155. While IEC 60571 primarily describes basic technical requirements for electronic equipment for rail vehicles, EN 50155 now offers a more comprehensive framework - adapted to current European standards and requirements. The owa5X complies with both standards, which is an advantage for international projects.

Conclusion

The successful EN 50155 certification underlines Owasys' commitment to the highest quality and reliability in the industrial environment - now also officially for rail transportation. This makes the owa5X an ideal solution for demanding rail applications where performance, connectivity and certification go hand in hand.
