The transformation to a smart city

The foundations of the Smart City
With our white paper, we want to create a general understanding of the transformation to a smart city. It also explains in more detail which goals and strategies are being pursued and which resources, structures and competencies are needed for this digital transformation.
In addition to eGovernment for public authorities, networking and automation continue to be key drivers for digitization in the public sector. With the help of automated processes, resources can be used more efficiently. Likewise, time savings for employees and the smooth flow of work processes can be optimized in the long term. Smart city applications can be used across all sectors and will change society in the long term.
Innovation is in demand
A wide range of network and communication solutions are already available today for the implementation of smart city applications. Regardless of whether "high-speed" or "lightweight" message transport, the number of networked devices, the total amount of data and the internet traffic via private or public networks are continuously increasing. The new mobile communications technology 5G, fibre optics and also the expansion of the address space from 32 to 128 bits for packet-switched computer networks through IPv6 serve the purpose of expanding, improving and accelerating internet communication.
The significant increase in sensor networks, including LoRaWAN, WLAN, Bluetooth and the exponential growth of machine-to-machine communication (M2M), as well as the smart networking of so-called commodities and assets, also require innovative concepts and systems.
